Mayfield Sixth Form student plays first national hockey match with her PE teacher!
Alice O’Connell in Year 12, at Mayfield School, took her hockey expertise to the next level last weekend playing in her first national league match for Sevenoaks Ladies alongside her PE teacher.
Prior to her call up for Sevenoaks Hockey Club, Alice had played for county and regional hockey teams and last season made the move to Sevenoaks Hockey club, where current PE teachers, Mrs Fletcher and Mrs Miller play.
The sports scholar also follows in the footsteps of Old Cornelian’s Lucy Turner and Flick Wooley, who both came through the outstanding Mayfield hockey system resulting in them playing National League hockey for Sevenoaks – although Alice is the first to achieve selection in Year 12!
Acting Head of PE Mrs Fletcher said: “After an initial start in Sevenoaks Ladies 2nd XI, who play in east Division 1, Alice was selected to play her first national League match away to Ipswich. She played well and clearly made a good impression as she was selected for her second match at home to Wimbledon. Alice has been highlighted by the club’s coaching team as their developmental player this year so will remain training with the top two sides and will play between both teams. This is a fantastic opportunity for such a young player!”
In fact the Sevenoaks Ladies victory against Wimbledon was a Mayfield fair as the team also featured Old Cornelian Lucy Turner and Mrs Fletcher.
