St Columba’s College in St Albans were delighted to host St Albans MP, Daisy Cooper, for a discussion about the UK’s education system. David Waters, Head of Sixth Form, presented the event with students, Ahmad Zargar from St Columba’s Sixth Form and Siyi Cheng from Abbot’s Hill School, asking Ms Cooper questions.
The event was livestreamed to students and their parents watching from home. They posed questions to Ms Cooper on everything from how the Government should be preparing for exams next summer, the content of RE GCSE, the Liberal Democrat’s priorities for education, and how she thinks we should address the digital divide between schools and students as a result of COVID-19. The students and Ms Cooper also discussed how education can impact students’ mental health.
In the second half of the event, those watching from home had the chance to ask Ms Cooper their own questions through a live Q&A. They then went on to discuss other topics including the impact of COVID-19, and how the Liberal Democrats would have responded to the crisis differently.
Head of Sixth Form, David Waters, says: “Daisy Cooper MP was an excellent guest and it was a really enjoyable event. The questions from Ahmad and Siyi helped to reveal a number of live issues in schools – from controversies over exams, university provision to debates over the curriculum. It was a great opportunity to get an insight into the nature of Westminster life, the impact of COVID, and to explore many important issues that we have perhaps forgotten in the last six months, especially globalisation and the environment.”
St Columba’s College is greatly appreciative to Daisy Cooper for attending the event, it was a very interesting discussion about the current state of education.
